This course is designed for Operatives and Supervisors who have the responsibility to erect or monitor the erection of signing, lighting and guarding for work on the roadways and highways.

Course Objective

To provide Operatives and Supervisors with the skills and knowledge to perform their respective duties when signing, lighting and guarding to the standards prescribed by City & Guilds and in-line with the NRSW Act 1991, in order to safeguard themselves and others.

Course Content

The course includes a review of the requirements of the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 and the knowledge in how to:

  • New Roads and Street Works Act 1991
  • Basic principles of signing, lighting and guarding
  • Traffic control measures
  • Practical use of the Code of Practice
  • Portable traffic lights
  • Practical use of equipment


At the end of the course delegates will undertake:

  • Interaction of delegates during the course
  • Operatives will be assessed by way of practical tests and oral questioning and Supervisors by written assignments and observation exercises
